Petrobras confirmed the hydrocarbon discovery in the pre-salt layer of the Campos Basin, one of the country’s most important areas for deepwater exploration.

The find occurred in exploratory well 1-BRSA-1404DC-RJS, drilled in block CM-477, within the SC-AP4 sector. This well is located 201 kilometers off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in a water depth of 2,984 meters, reflecting the technical complexity of operations in this offshore environment.

Hydrocarbon discovery confirmed by technical analyses

Likewise, the presence of hydrocarbons was verified through electric logs, gas analyses, and fluid sampling—techniques commonly used in reservoir evaluation in oil exploration.

Subsequently, the collected samples will be sent to a laboratory to characterize fluid properties and reservoir conditions. These studies will make it possible to determine the area’s productive potential and define the next steps in its development.

Safe operation aligned with the energy strategy

In addition, Petrobras noted that the well drilling was carried out under strict safety standards, with an emphasis on protecting the environment and the personnel involved.

Activity in block CM-477 is part of the company’s strategy to replenish oil and gas reserves through exploration in frontier areas. This approach seeks to ensure Brazil’s energy supply in the context of the energy transition.

Partnership and project context

The company acts as the block operator with a 70% stake, in partnership with bp, which holds the remaining 30%. The block was awarded during the 16th bidding round of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), under the concession regime.

This new discovery reinforces the role of Brazil’s pre-salt as one of the world’s leading frontiers for hydrocarbon exploration, especially in scenarios of high technical complexity and great depth.
