Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation strengthened their business relationship by signing an eight-year Lifecycle Agreement that will cover four cruise ships from the Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line fleets, including two vessels currently under construction. The contract also represents the first services agreement between the two companies for Carnival vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
As a result, Wärtsilä will assume comprehensive support for the dual-fuel engines and associated equipment installed on the vessels included in the agreement. The Finnish company recorded the order during the second quarter of 2026.
A performance-driven operating model
The new agreement goes beyond conventional maintenance. Its aim is to maintain fleet reliability, increase asset availability, and reduce total cost of ownership through a service model based on performance indicators.
Likewise, both companies will align their operations through measurable targets, including reducing unplanned maintenance and minimizing unexpected disruptions during the operation of the cruise ships.
The solution combines Wärtsilä’s expertise as the original equipment manufacturer with its digital capabilities, global services, and remote monitoring tools to support the safe and efficient operation of the dual-fuel engines that power part of Carnival Corporation’s fleet.
LNG cruise ships with data-driven maintenance
According to Vera Lannek, Vice President of Strategic Sourcing and Asset Management at Carnival Corporation, the agreement supports the company’s strategy to maintain high operating standards and continue delivering a quality experience for passengers.
For her part, Andrea Morgante, Vice President of Performance Services at Wärtsilä Marine, noted that the contract consolidates a long-standing relationship between the two organizations and reflects their shared interest in improving cruise ship performance through proactive maintenance, data analytics, and technical collaboration throughout the assets’ service life.
In recent years, cruise operators have increased the adoption of data- and performance-based maintenance contracts to manage increasingly complex technologies. This type of agreement makes it possible to plan interventions more accurately, reduce operational risks, and improve vessel availability.
Scope of the agreement
The program includes planned and corrective maintenance, spare parts supply and logistics, engine overhauls, predictive maintenance, remote monitoring, technical audits, performance assessment, consulting services, crew training, and tracking through key performance indicators (KPIs).
With this comprehensive approach, Wärtsilä aims to optimize the lifecycle of the dual-fuel engines installed on Carnival Corporation’s cruise ships, contributing to a more efficient, safe operation that is ready to meet the demands of the LNG-powered cruise market.
