Verlume and SubCtech they signed a memorandum of understanding to develop underwater energy solutions that will integrate storage, communications, and control for offshore and defense applications. The alliance combines Verlume’s underwater energy platform and systems integration expertise with SubCtech’s battery technology and manufacturing capabilities. The goal is to develop an architecture capable of managing various underwater components within a single system. Both companies are already working on specific applications and will use this agreement as a framework to identify new opportunities in the offshore, marine, and defense energy markets.
Verlume and SubCtech will integrate Axonn with battery systems
One of the central elements of the collaboration will be Axonn, Verlume’s technology designed to manage the generation, storage, distribution and consumption of energy within an integrated underwater architecture. SubCtech’s battery systems will be able to be incorporated into this platform, which also coordinates communications and control of equipment installed underwater.
This approach will allow underwater energy solutions to be adapted to the technical needs of each project, preventing energy storage from having to be managed as an isolated component from the rest of the infrastructure, David Clark, CEO of Verlume, pointed out that offshore operationsContinuous operations increasingly require that energy, storage, communications, and control work in a coordinated manner. According to the executive, the collaboration with SubCtech expands the configurations available to customers, while maintaining Verlume’s focus on the intelligent integration of different subsea technologies.
Underwater batteries for long-duration operations
SubCtech, for its part, contributes its expertise in the design and manufacture of rechargeable lithium-ion battery systems for marine, offshore, and subsea applications. These solutions are designed for extended deployments and demanding operating conditions. By integrating them with Axonn, both companies aim to develop systems where energy storage can work directly with the equipment, communications, and controls used by the operator.
SubCtech is also part of the Gabler Group, which gives it access to complementary capabilities related to underwater communications and monitoring. Stefan Marx, CTO of SubCtech, explained that combining the company’s battery technology with Axonn and Verlume’s integration expertise will allow for the configuration of flexible solutions for demanding underwater applications.
Offshore oil and gas, among the priority markets
The alliance will pay special attention to the offshore oil and gas operationsIn this sector, subsea power systems can be used to maintain aging infrastructure, extend the operational life of fields, and support operations with greater autonomy. Instead of installing subsea batteries as standalone units, Verlume and SubCtech propose approaching projects from a holistic perspective. This involves jointly managing the interfaces between storage, power supply, communications, control, and end-user equipment.
This approach can simplify technological integration and facilitate the coordinated operation of different components within a single subsea architecture. In addition to oil and gas, companies will explore opportunities in marine energy and defense; the memorandum will serve as a framework for expanding collaboration and bringing these integrated solutions to larger-scale projects.
