Energy company Uniper has awarded Danish company Topsoe the front-end engineering design contract for the NorthStarH2 project, located in Östersund, Sweden. The industrial facility will process renewable hydrogen along with biogenic carbon dioxide captured from biomass combustion, with the purpose of generating approximately 115,000 tons of e-methanol annually once operational.
Modular technology at the NorthStarH2 e-methanol plant
The contracted engineering is based on the ModuLite technology developed by Topsoe, which integrates gas compression through prefabricated modular schemes. This architecture accelerates construction times, streamlines infrastructure commissioning, and offers a dynamic synthesis cycle capable of responding stably to the variations inherent in renewable energy supply.
Furthermore, the project seeks to meet the environmental demands of energy-intensive industries, directing production primarily toward the maritime transport and chemical industry sectors.
The strategic location in northern Sweden provides access to established road and rail connections, which will facilitate the distribution of e-methanol at national and regional levels toward other markets on the European continent.
Likewise, the final investment decision is scheduled for 2028, a period in which both entities will complete the required technical, logistical, and financial analyses. With the signing of this contract, Uniper’s project portfolio consolidates the deployment of low-carbon solutions on existing energy infrastructures.
In the words of executives from both companies, the cooperation strengthens the Nordic region’s position in the field of clean fuels. Yassir Ghiyati, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, mentioned that the integration of synthesis technology and specialized engineering will contribute to accelerating carbon neutrality in critical markets.
On the other hand, Broghan Helgeson, NorthStarH2 Project Manager at Uniper, noted that the contract reached allows for a detailed definition of the plant’s design and construction strategy. In this way, technical collaboration between key suppliers ensures orderly progress toward the next phase of industrial development.
