TotalEnergies and Mistral allocate US$115 million to AI for oil and gas

TotalEnergies and Mistral will apply advanced AI to subsurface analysis, hydrocarbon exploration and field development.

TotalEnergies y Mistral AI will develop advanced artificial intelligence models to analyze subsurface data and support decisions related to exploration, deposits, and field development.

Both companies launched a three-year program with an investment exceeding 100 million euros, equivalent to about US$115 million, intended to create new tools for oil and gas exploration and production activities.

The initiative will focus on the exploration, characterization of deposits and development of fields to achieve this, TotalEnergies will contribute its geoscientific data and expertise in geosciences and reservoir engineering, while Mistral AI will contribute its artificial intelligence capabilities. The goal is to bring advanced AI models directly to the energy company’s upstream operations.

AI to interpret large volumes of subsurface data

One of the main objectives of the program will be to develop models capable of integrating, processing, and interpreting large amounts of data subsurface data.

These tools will be able to generate different scenarios for analyzing exploration and development opportunities. They are also expected to be used in existing oil and gas fields, where they could help identify operational improvements and options for extending their productive life.

In this way, specialists will be able to use artificial intelligence to help interpret geological information, compare alternatives, and evaluate different scenarios before making decisions about asset development.

The program will leverage nearly a century of experience accumulated by TotalEnergies in geosciences and reservoir engineering, along with information obtained during decades of exploration and production activities.

TotalEnergies incorporates agentic AI into its upstream operations

The collaboration also includes the use of Agentic AI, a technology capable of executing sequences of tasks oriented towards specific objectives.

In the subsurface realm, this approach can facilitate the processing of complex geoscientific information and the generation of multiple scenarios for a single exploration or development opportunity. The models can support the analysis of data related to deposits and facilitate the comparison of different alternatives to determine how to proceed with a field.

According to the executive, combining the company’s geoscientific data, the expertise of its specialists, and Mistral’s technological capabilities will allow the development of new tools to interpret complex information and support decision-making.

A joint laboratory to develop AI models

As part of the program, TotalEnergies and Mistral will establish a joint scientific laboratory focused on the development of these technologies.

The space will bring together subsurface specialists from TotalEnergies with researchers and artificial intelligence engineers from Mistral. The goal will be to create tools specifically tailored to the technical needs of exploration and production operations.

This approach will allow working with specialized models, designed to solve specific problems in the energy sector, instead of relying solely on general artificial intelligence systems.

Furthermore, the experience accumulated by the geosciences and reservoir engineering teams will serve to guide the training, validation and application of the models developed during the program.

AI seeks to optimize the development of oil fields

The oil and gas exploration it requires processing large volumes of geological, geophysical, and engineering information before defining how to develop a discovery.

During this process, different well configurations, production schemes, and development alternatives can be analyzed. The models being prepared by TotalEnergies and Mistral will seek to expedite some of this work.

The technology will be able to generate multiple scenarios so that specialists can compare results, identify the most relevant options, and determine which ones need more detailed studies.

Its application will also extend to assets already in production, companies plan to use these models to identify optimization opportunities and analyze alternatives that allow them to extending the useful life of oil and gas projects.

The program expands the collaboration that TotalEnergies and Mistral AI already maintain in artificial intelligence and reinforces the incorporation of these technologies in the operator’s technical and industrial activities.
