The update to the ISO 9001 standard continues to progress and is now in one of its final stages ahead of its official publication scheduled for 2026. The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) was distributed to ISO member bodies for the final round of voting and technical comments.
ISO 9001 is the most widely used international standard for quality management systems. Its main purpose is to help organizations maintain consistent processes capable of meeting regulatory requirements and customer expectations while strengthening continuous improvement.
Currently, thousands of certified companies and organizations are closely monitoring this revision due to the impact it will have on audits, certifications, and internal processes over the coming years.
An update with moderate changes
Unlike the revision published in 2015, the upcoming ISO 9001:2026 includes modifications considered moderate. This means that organizations certified under ISO 9001:2015 would not face complex structural transformations during the transition.
According to industry specialists, the main objective of this revision is to adapt the standard to a more dynamic, digitalized, and sustainability-focused business environment without altering the core foundation of the quality management system.
Likewise, the update seeks to strengthen the standard’s practical applicability through additional clarifications and improvements in the interpretation of requirements.
Leadership and a quality culture take on greater prominence
One of the most significant changes within ISO 9001:2026 will be the strengthening of corporate leadership responsibilities.
The new version increases the emphasis on:
- quality culture
- ethical behavior
- management commitment
- risk-based decision-making
This approach aims for quality management to stop being perceived solely as a documentation function and to be integrated more directly into organizational strategy.
In addition, the future standard will more clearly separate the management of risks and opportunities through specific clauses and more precise guidance for certified companies.
Climate change and change management come into focus
The revision also officially incorporates the climate change-related amendments introduced by ISO during 2024.
These modifications require organizations to assess how climate factors may affect their quality management systems and operations.
Furthermore, ISO 9001:2026 will strengthen requirements related to change management within the quality system to ensure continuity of intended results and operational stability.
Clauses within sections 4 through 10 will receive specific updates and supplementary notes aimed at facilitating implementation and interpretation.
The transition period could extend for three years
Although the final publication of the standard is expected around September 2026, organizations will subsequently have a transition period to adapt their certified systems.
According to international drafts linked to accreditation bodies, the estimated timeframe would be three years from the official publication.
During that period, companies must:
- review potential compliance gaps
- update procedures
- train staff
- prepare for transition audits
Certification specialists recommend starting preparations early to reduce operational risks and avoid delays during future certification renewals.
Organizations begin preparing for ISO 9001:2026
Certification bodies and assessment organizations have already begun developing training programs, seminars, and preparatory audits focused on the new version of the standard.
The growing interest in ISO 9001:2026 reflects the continued importance of quality management across industrial, technology, and service sectors worldwide.
With this update, ISO seeks to keep one of the most influential standards for competitiveness, customer confidence, and continuous improvement within modern organizations up to date.
