Grupo Bimbo will strengthen its decarbonization strategy in Europe thanks to a purchase agreement renewable energy signed with Repsol. The agreement will allow the multinational bakery company to cover the equivalent of 100% of its annual electricity consumption in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy with electricity from the Spanish energy company’s renewable assets.
Through nine virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) with a duration of twelve years, the company will receive approximately 150 GWh of renewable electricity per year. The supply will be backed by Repsol’s wind and solar installations in Spain, including its first hybrid solar projects, designed to optimize the use of available resources and increase generation efficiency.
An agreement to accelerate the climate roadmap
The operation will allow Grupo Bimbo to advance in its emissions reduction objectives by supporting the energy consumption of 18 European production centers with renewable electricity directly associated with generation assets.
Furthermore, the manufacturer is taking an additional step regarding the use of Guarantees of Origin by committing to long-term contracts that contribute to the development and stability of renewable energy projects. Schneider Electric advised on the transaction.

João Costeira, Repsol’s General Manager of Low Carbon Generation, highlighted that the alliance strengthens the company’s renewable portfolio while responding to the energy needs of customers with long-term climate goals.
For his part, Baptiste Leroux, Vice President of Purchasing for Grupo Bimbo EMEA, noted that securing renewable electricity equivalent to the total consumption of its operations in Spain, Portugal, France and Italy represents a significant step forward in the corporate strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and improve the resilience of its operations.
