Amid the rapid growth of AI data centers, SolarEdge and NVIDIA have initiated the conversion from medium voltage to 800 VDC under operational load. This advancement makes it possible to validate the entire power supply chain at their engineering facilities, addressing the growing energy demand of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The company has introduced a protection and grounding framework developed in collaboration with NVIDIA. The document seeks to establish the criteria required to ensure the safe, reliable, and standardized deployment of direct-current systems across the industry.
SolarEdge and NVIDIA advance AI power architecture
According to the joint technical report, the usual protection practices used in alternating current are not applicable to converter-fed direct-current architectures. For this reason, the SolarEdge and NVIDIA proposal separates general safety requirements from manufacturer-specific design decisions.
As a result, the scheme sets out a zone-based strategy that enables fault localization while maintaining continuous service in restricted areas. In addition, the system performs immediate power interruption at the rack interfaces where personnel are working.
The open ecosystem promoted by NVIDIA supports multiple conversion topologies, grounding configurations, and solid-state breakers. Among the alternatives assessed, high-resistance midpoint grounding and solid-state transformers stand out as viable solutions.
In addition, the developed technology uses functions proven for more than a decade in the photovoltaic sector, such as series arc detection, DC disconnection, and continuous insulation monitoring. While this track record provides component-level backing, the company continues to carry out validations specific to critical data processing environments.
SolarEdge is keeping an end-to-end platform in the testing phase, covering distribution with residual current measurement, branch-level interruption, and system-level insulation monitoring. The organization has invited operators, suppliers, and standards bodies to evaluate this neutral infrastructure.
