Petrobras negotiations began for explore four offshore blocks in the Keta Basin, an operation that expands its oil and gas exploration strategy outside of Brazil.

Brazilian state oil company Petrobras is moving toward a greater presence in West Africa after receiving authorization to negotiate exploration contracts for four offshore blocks in Ghana. The areas are located in the Keta Basin and are part of the company’s search for new opportunities to expand its international exploration portfolio.

According to information released by the company, Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Ecological Transition has approved Petrobras’s expression of interest. With this decision, both parties can move forward with discussions on the terms applicable to exploration contracts.

Petrobras focuses on the Keta basin

For its part, the interest in the Keta basin responds to the strategy of Petrobras to incorporate new areas with oil and gas potential. The company seeks to replenish reserves through exploration projects both within Brazil and in other regions.

In addition, Sylvia Anjos, Petrobras’ Director of Exploration and Production, told Reuters that the Ghana blocks have geological similarities to Brazil’s Equatorial Margin, considered one of the main oil frontiers currently being studied by the company.

This geological relationship adds technical interest to the African areas, however, the negotiations still constitute a preliminary stage of exploratory activity and do not in themselves represent a confirmation of commercial hydrocarbon resources.

Africa gains ground in the exploration strategy

Ghana is also part of Petrobras’ broader strategy to strengthen its exploration and production activities in Africa. The company aims to make the continent its main exploration region outside of Brazil.

In this context, Petrobras has evaluated opportunities in other African markets such as São Tomé and Príncipe, Namibia, Ivory Coast, and South Africa. This search demonstrates the oil company’s interest in geographically diversifying its E&P portfolio and accessing new frontiers oil and gas.

International expansion also allows for the distribution of exploration exposure across different basins while Petrobras maintains Brazil as the center of its operations.

New frontiers to replenish oil and gas reserves

On the other hand, the negotiation of the four offshore blocks in Ghana is linked to one of the company’s main objectives: to replenish its oil and gas reserves through new exploration campaigns.

Petrobras has indicated that it is exploring opportunities to diversify its portfolio and support long-term growth. Consequently, frontier areas are gaining relevance given the need to identify resources that can be incorporated into future production projects.

The operation in Ghana also comes while the oil company maintains exploratory activity in Brazil, in this way, the company combines the search for hydrocarbons in its main market with a selective expansion into international basins.

For now, the next step in Ghana will be to advance negotiations on the contracts for the four blocks in the Keta Basin. The outcome of these talks will determine the conditions under which Petrobras could develop future offshore exploration activities in the African country.
