The company Ocean Sun will lead the La Palma demonstrator within the European project Isla Bonita, an initiative promoted by the Restore our Ocean and Waters mission of Horizon Europe that seeks to promote sustainable solutions for energy and water management in island communities.

The project is coordinated by the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) and brings together nine demonstrators distributed across various locations in Europe. In the case of La Palma, Ocean Sun will work alongside ACUIPALMA SL and NeoDyne to integrate floating solar energy and desalination technologies within a single operational environment.

A solution to strengthen the resilience of the islands

Island regions face unique challenges related to energy supply and water resource availability. In this context, the combination of floating photovoltaic generation and desalination water production emerges as an alternative to reduce dependence on external sources and improve local sustainability.

According to Ocean Sun, the La Palma demonstrator will allow researchers to evaluate the performance of its technology under harsh marine conditions. The goal is to gather information that will contribute to future research and the operational improvement of floating solar systems.

A laboratory for validating technology under real-world conditions

In addition to providing renewable energy, the facility will function as a testing platform to validate processes, collect data, and optimize the technology’s performance in maritime environments.

The experience gained will be used to analyze aspects related to operational efficiency, the integration of desalination systems and the adaptation of the infrastructure to scenarios characteristic of coastal and island areas.

Likewise, the project seeks to generate knowledge applicable to future implementations of floating solar energy in other European regions with similar water and electricity needs.

Horizon Europe promotes sustainable solutions for islands

Ocean Sun’s participation in Isla Bonita is part of Horizon Europe’s efforts to accelerate the development of technologies that contribute to ocean restoration and more sustainable management of natural resources.

With nine active demonstrators in Europe, the initiative aims to foster innovative solutions capable of responding to environmental and energy challenges through collaboration between companies, technology centers and specialized organizations.

For Ocean Sun, the project represents an opportunity to validate the potential of floating solar energy in applications linked to the water and energy security of island communities, an area that is gaining relevance as the need for resilient and sustainable infrastructure increases.
