The company Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has formalized its entry into the liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) transport sector through the technical management of the vessel Northern Purpose. This vessel, recently christened at the Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore shipyards in China, stands as one of only four operational units globally designed specifically for this logistics modality.
Operational specifications of the vessel Northern Purpose
The vessel’s technical infrastructure is distinguished by a total cargo capacity of 7,500 cubic meters, efficiently distributed across two cylindrical pressure tanks. These containers ensure the safe handling of carbon dioxide under strict conditions of low temperature and medium pressure. Furthermore, the environmental optimization of the design integrates a dual-fuel propulsion system based on liquefied natural gas, a wind-assisted rotor sail, and an advanced air lubrication mechanism.
In this way, the integration of these technologies allows for a substantial reduction in the carbon footprint derived from commercial shipping. The auxiliary systems underwent rigorous verification during sea trials prior to the official delivery of the vessel. The implementation of these components aims to mitigate environmental impact on designated routes in Northwest Europe.
Furthermore, the Northern Purpose will dedicate its long-term operational activity to supporting the Northern Lights storage project in Norway. This initiative constitutes the first commercial cross-border infrastructure network for the safe confinement of European industrial emissions. BSM has actively collaborated since the initial design and planning processes to ensure compliance with current maritime safety regulations.
To ensure efficiency in these complex operations, the company selected experienced crew members from its liquefied petroleum gas division. The personnel completed intensive training cycles in specific simulators and technical internships on sister ships. This specialized preparation ensures the correct handling of cargo and the preventive maintenance of the hybrid propulsion systems.
