Qatar begins work in Campo Norte
The Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has declared the beginning of an expansion project in the North Field, which is the largest natural gas field in the world located in the northeast of the peninsula. This initiative is expected to increase production by 33 million tonnes per year over a three-year period.
“Today we have laid the first stone for the North Field expansion project, which is part of our strategy to strengthen Qatar’s position as a global liquefied natural gas producing country.”, Al Thani published on his official X account after the ceremony of laying the first stone.
The emir noted that ” this project enhances Qatar’s pioneering role in meeting the need for energy in the global market ,” as well as strengthening its position in the sector.
The plan for production
The plan consists of two stages, beginning with the expansion of the Oriental Field, which will take liquefied natural gas production from 77 million tons annually to 110 million tons by 2026 , according to the country’s official news agency, QNA . .
The second phase involves increasing production capacity from 110 million tonnes to 126 million tonnes of liquefied gas and is expected to be operational in 2027. This stage will include the incorporation of two new production lines with a capacity of 16 million tons each, according to the same source.
The expansion project is divided into two main areas: the eastern and southern sector of the field; and its completion is expected for the year 2027.
It is important to mention that the companies TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, Conoco Phillips, Eni and Shell have acquired contracts for the development of the eastern part of the gas field, with investments totaling 28.75 billion dollars.
Specifically, TotalEnergies, Shell and Conoco Phillips have been awarded contracts to develop the southern part of the field in collaboration with QatarEnergy.
This northern natural gas field, which was discovered in 1971, is the largest in the world and covers an area of 9,700 km 2 , of which almost 6,000 km 2 are located in Qatar and the rest in Iran.
Likewise, 50.97 billion m 3 of natural gas and 7.9 billion m 3 of natural gas condensate are stored within the field.
