The German cleantech company Enapter has launched the first standardized electrolyser suitable for mass production, in order to boost the green hydrogen market, reducing the costs of standardized solar panels.

The AEM 4.0 electrolyser produces ecological hydrogen and is the next step to replace fossil fuels, being the fourth generation of AEM (anionic exchange membrane) electrolysers that Enapter has developed since 2017, this new version is smaller, lighter and has ISO 22734 certification. Enapter’s technology combines the advantages of the low-cost materials of alkaline electrolyzers (steel instead of titanium) with the flexibility and compact size of PEM electrolyzers.

Standardized modules can be stacked and combined for projects of any size, up to the megawatt scale, where Enapter’s AEM Multicore technology is based on identical AEM stack technology.

With its new model, Enapter wants to satisfy the strong demand for easily installable and integrable electrolysers. Customers have already placed more than 400 orders, even before the market launch. Enapter has more than 100 integration partners installing its green hydrogen generators around the world, driving decarbonization in sectors ranging from energy to mobility, industry and the built environment.

The easy plug and play integration of the Electrolyzer 4.0 significantly shortens installation time for these integration partners.

“The next milestone in our mission: Substitute fossil fuels for green hydrogen,” says Sebastian-Justus Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Enapter. “EL 4.0 will become a building block for system integrators, enabling them to rapidly deploy hydrogen production and enact the market growth the world needs. We are confident that the future mass production of these AEM electrolysers will fundamentally change the production of green hydrogen,” commented Schmidt.

Serial production of the new electrolysers is currently carried out at the Enapter plant in Pisa (Italy). The first deliveries to integrators are scheduled for summer 2022. Mass production (>10,000 AEM EL 4.0 modules per month) is scheduled to start scaling up from 2023 at the Enapter Campus, which is under construction in Saerbeck, Germany.

The AEM Electrolyser EL 4.0 is available to order immediately in four versions: AC, DC, air-cooled, and water-cooled.
