Woodside Energy Secures Domestic Gas Supply to Alcoa in Western Australia

The commercial agreement will supply the alumina refineries between 2027 and 2030 through the utilization of state processing energy infrastructure.

The corporation Woodside Energy formalized a sales and purchase agreement with Alcoa of Australia for the provision of domestic gas. This agreement contemplates a total volume of 31.1 petajoules destined for the domestic market of Western Australia over a three-year period, spanning from 2027 to 2030. Through this alliance, the objective is to ensure operational continuity of the mineral processing plants in the region.

Industrial Distribution of Domestic Gas for Alumina Processing

As a result of this commercial commitment, the hydrocarbon will be transported directly to the refineries operated by Alcoa. Consequently, this constant flow will enable sustained alumina production, the base compound for aluminum manufacturing that supplies the construction, manufacturing, and energy sectors. Therefore, the viability of thousands of local jobs will depend on the stability of the energy supply agreed upon between both organizations.

For their part, Woodside representatives stated that the current regulatory framework of Western Australia facilitates a predictable environment for large industrial users. Likewise, they indicated that this scheme incentivizes the use of energy sources with lower levels of pollutant emissions in complex metallurgical activities.

Regarding the origin of the resource, the supply was optimized through regulatory decisions made by the State Government at the end of 2025. Specifically, the approved extension for the operation of the Pluto-Karratha gas plant interconnector enabled the processing of surplus volumes using available installed capacity. In this manner, the surplus extracted from the Pluto fields is efficiently channeled into the local distribution system for immediate consumption.

Regarding the background of the supplier company, Woodside consolidates a track record exceeding four decades supplying the regional environment. For example, the firm contributed 90.3 petajoules during 2025, a figure equivalent to 21 percent of the total domestic gas demand in said Australian state. Finally, commercial management confirmed that it maintains open dialogues with multiple economic actors with the purpose of finalizing new long-term supply contracts.
