Trump signs permit to reactivate sections of the former Keystone XL between Canada and Wyoming

The energy industry is viewing this reactivation with optimism, as it promises competitive tariffs and greater integration of the continent’s natural resources.

President Donald Trump signed a presidential permit on Thursday that gives the green light to a crude oil transportation proposal designed to connect the Canadian border with the distribution hubs in Wyoming. This strategic move seeks to leverage infrastructure segments that remained inactive after the cancellation of previous projects in 2021.

The reactivation of the Keystone XL segments

Likewise, this initiative arises from the collaboration between the Canadian firm South Bow and its U.S. partner Bridger Pipeline. The technical plan consists of building an extension of more than 1,000 kilometers that will facilitate the shipment of heavy crude oil to southern markets.

The intention is to strengthen energy autonomy by increasing Canada’s export capacity to U.S. refineries by more than 12%.

Under this premise, the project will use pipeline sections installed in Canadian territory. It is estimated that about 150 kilometers of lines are ready to enter operation after having completed all regulatory processes in Canada.

For its part, Bridger Pipeline is planning a route that crosses the states of Montana and Wyoming to reach the Guernsey logistics hub. This node is vital, as it will enable connection to existing networks toward Oklahoma and the Gulf Coast.

It is also reported that several oil companies have expressed firm commitments to move an initial volume of 450,000 barrels per day. This figure represents strong support for the project’s profitability.

The Government of Canada, through its official spokespersons, has indicated that it is closely monitoring the development of this presidential permit while prioritizing North America’s energy security and the diversification of its trade ties.

It is essential to consider that the proposed route differs from previous routes to minimize impacts in sensitive areas. Although the federal authorization is a crucial step, state-level procedures and possible legal reviews still remain, which the project proponents will need to manage.
