The Norwegian company TGS he launched and expanded several seismic projects in Norway, Ghana and Canada the initiatives aim to improve the image of the subsoil and reduce uncertainty in offshore exploration areas.
The company is making progress with 3D seismic reprocessing in the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea, and is also developing a 2D-cubed project in the Keta Basin in conjunction with the Ghana Petroleum Commission.
TGS seismic projects are progressing in the Orphan Basin
TGS the second phase of the Orphan3D PSDM project off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, the project involves reprocessing approximately 13,300 km² of 3D seismic data.
The goal is to improve image quality and facilitate a more accurate reading of the geology of the cuenca Orphan this will allow exploration companies to evaluate prospects in more detail and make investment decisions with better technical support. Preliminary product deliveries are planned for 2027, with final migrated volumes scheduled for the third quarter of 2028.
Jim Keating, CEO of the Oil and Gas Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador, emphasized that investment in geoscientific information is crucial to maintaining the region’s competitiveness. He explained that the new processing will allow for improved assessment of opportunities in the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador.
TGS will reprocess data from the Norwegian Sea
In parallel, TGS announced the proyecto Atlantic Margin South Reprocessing the initiative will cover more than 23,000 km² of 3D data in a little-explored area of the Norwegian continental shelf.
The processing will be done in stages, with the first intermediate products available in the third quarter of 2026. The final integrated volume is expected for the second quarter of 2027.
Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS, noted that the dataset will help identify new opportunities and reduce risks in a volcanic basin with gas potential.
The project will also allow for the updating of multi-client seismic information; this type of database is used by different companies to review prospects and plan new exploration campaigns.
Ghana opts for a 2D-cubed seismic model
The third initiative is being developed in the Keta basin, in the Gulf of Guinea TGS signed an agreement with the Ghana Petroleum Commission to create a new offshore project under the 2D-cubed approach.
The first phase will integrate 5,500 km² of 3D data and over 14,700 kilometers of 2D information, from this material, the company will generate a 25,300 km² volume covering the continental shelf and deep-water areas. The final products will be available during the first quarter of 2027.
David Hajosky, executive vice president of Multi-Client at TGS, indicated that the integration of historical data will give explorers a clearer foundation for nurturing leads. The project also aims to support increased activity in the West African transforming margin.
A strategy focused on geoscientific data
The three projects reflect a common strategy: to update seismic information in basins with exploratory potential and to offer tools that reduce technical uncertainty.
In Canada and Norway, TGS focuses on reprocessing large volumes of 3D data; in Ghana, the company combines 2D and 3D information to build a new regional view of the subsurface.
This expansion reinforces the role of seismic data in offshore exploration, and also shows how advanced processing has become a key element in prioritizing investments and evaluating resources in oil and gas markets.
