Phase 2 of the reprocessing of the Orphan3D PSDM project in the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, will update approximately 13,300 km² of 3D seismic data to strengthen hydrocarbon exploration in one of the North Atlantic’s most promising basins. Thus, the project seeks to offer a more precise image of the subsurface through the application of new seismic processing technologies. The goal is to provide exploration companies with higher quality geoscientific information to support prospect identification and the planning of future exploratory campaigns.
Reprocessing Phase 2 in Newfoundland and Labrador
For this new phase, TGS will employ advanced Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) techniques along with imaging workflows developed by the company; these tools will allow for improved seismic resolution, increased structural definition, and optimized characterization of potential reservoirs.
Furthermore, the project focuses on the Cretaceous and Jurassic geological intervals, where a more detailed representation of various structural and stratigraphic petroleum systems is expected. As a result, exploration teams will have a more robust database to interpret the potential of the Orphan basin.
An investment aimed at strengthening exploration in Canada
Additionally, the reprocessed data will expand the TGS seismic library for Newfoundland and Labrador and contribute to the energy industry’s sustained interest in this Canadian region. Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS, stated that the company remains committed to investing in high-quality subsurface data to support offshore exploration and generate geoscientific information that facilitates new investments and reduces uncertainty during prospect evaluation.
For his part, Jim Keating, CEO of Oil and Gas Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador, highlighted that the availability of higher quality geoscientific data strengthens the province’s international competitiveness as a destination for new exploration campaigns and future bidding rounds.
Products available starting in 2027
According to the announced schedule, the first products derived from the reprocessing will be available during 2027, while the delivery of the final migrated volumes is planned for the third quarter of that same year. With this initiative, TGS continues to expand its presence in the geoscientific data market for offshore exploration and consolidates its strategy of providing high-resolution information that facilitates decision-making in oil and gas projects in the North Atlantic.
