The Salt River Project (SRP) will add up to 600 MW of wind power in Arizona through a power purchase agreement with Pattern Energy. The electricity will come from the SunZia project, one of the largest wind power generation and transmission initiatives in the southwestern United States.
The agreement will allow SRP to receive 400 MW starting this fall, with the allocation increasing to 600 MW by the summer of 2027, according to terms announced by both companies. With this capacity, the public utility aims to meet growing electricity demand in the Phoenix metropolitan area while maintaining reliability, cost-effectiveness, and emissions reductions.
SunZia will strengthen Arizona’s power grid
In addition, SunZia combines a 3,650 MW wind resource with an 885-kilometer HVDC transmission line. This infrastructure is designed to transport large volumes of electricity over long distances with greater efficiency, a crucial factor for integrating renewable energy into high-demand markets.
The project represents an $11 billion energy investment in the southwest of the country, according to Pattern Energy. SunZia will have the capacity to supply enough electricity to power about one million American homes per year.
Un PPA crucial para Salt River Project
Currently, SRP has 288 MW of wind power in operation for its customers. With the addition of SunZia, the company will triple its available wind capacity and expand a portfolio that already includes hydroelectric, solar, natural gas, battery storage and other generation sources.
Likewise, the agreement is part of SRP’s plan to more than double the capacity of its electrical system by 2035. This expansion will combine thousands of megawatts of renewable energy with natural gas and batteries, with the goal of serving a region where electricity demand continues to rise due to population, industrial, and technological growth.
Pattern Energy reinforces SunZia’s advance
Pattern Energy, a private developer and operator of clean infrastructure, highlighted that the agreement demonstrates how a diverse energy portfolio can support grid reliability. The company has more than 40 facilities in North America and a pipeline of nearly 12,000 MW of operational and under-construction capacity.
SRP serves approximately 1.2 million electric customers in the Phoenix metropolitan area and provides water services to about 2.5 million residents of the Valley. The addition of wind power from SunZia reinforces its strategy to maintain a more flexible, affordable, and resilient electrical grid.
