Energy company RWE has reinforced its commitment to fusion energy by increasing its investment in Focused Energy, a German company specializing in laser fusion based in Darmstadt, by €60 million. The transaction is part of the company’s Series A funding round and strengthens Germany’s position in the global race to develop commercial fusion reactors.

Currently, the international nuclear fusion industry is experiencing a period of strong growth driven by private capital, government support, and scientific advancements. In this context, Germany is seeking to establish itself as one of the leading technological hubs for fusion energy development in Europe.

Germany strengthens its nuclear fusion ecosystem

The funding round brought together capital from investors in Europe, the United States, Asia and the Gulf region, and in addition to RWE, the German Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation participated, reflecting the growing institutional and financial interest in laser fusion technologies.

Focused Energy highlighted that Germany has favorable conditions to accelerate the industrial development of this technology thanks to the presence of specialized research centers, startups, existing energy infrastructure and a well-established supply chain.

Likewise, the company believes that the country can maintain its competitive advantage in the development of fusion energy compared to other international markets.

Biblis seeks to become a strategic center for laser fusion

As part of its expansion strategy, Focused Energy is participating alongside the state of Hesse and other partners in the call promoted by the German government to create a national laser fusion center.

The Biblis complex appears as one of the crucial sites for this project due to its already installed nuclear infrastructure and the operations that the company is currently carrying out in the area.

The funding secured will allow for further research and development of laser fusion technology in Biblis. Furthermore, RWE confirmed it would accelerate the decommissioning of existing facilities if the complex is selected to host the future fusion center.

RWE bets on German leadership in fusion energy

RWE AG CEO Markus Krebber stated that Germany has a scientific and industrial ecosystem capable of leading the global nuclear fusion market.

He explained that RWE’s experience in nuclear infrastructure and regulatory processes can help reduce time and costs for the development of future commercial fusion reactors.

Thomas Forner, CEO of Focused Energy, noted that the new funding represents a decisive step in transforming the scientific potential of laser fusion into concrete industrial applications.

The executive highlighted that the company went from being a technology startup to becoming one of the world’s leading laser fusion companies in just four years.

Hesse promotes energy innovation in Germany

The regional government of Hesse also publicly endorsed the project. Boris Rhein, the state’s premier, described the investment as an important step in strengthening the region’s position as a European leader in advanced fusion energy research.

The initiative reinforces Germany’s role in the new technological race to develop clean energy sources capable of providing stable supply and low emissions on a large scale.
