QatarEnergy updated information on the incident at the Barzan gas supply plant and confirmed the deaths of 13 workers while investigations continue to determine the causes of the explosion and fire in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

According to the company, 66 other people are receiving medical attention, none of whom are in critical condition. The company expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated its commitment to providing support to all those affected by the emergency.

QatarEnergy rules out sabotage and points to an operational accident

According to the official statement, the company emphasized that the event was an operational accident and that there is no evidence of sabotage or hostile actions related to the incident.

The deceased were of Indian and Pakistani nationality, while the injured workers belong to different nationalities, including Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, Nigerian and Nepalese.

The company also stated that it maintains ongoing coordination with the authorities to support the investigation and provide assistance to those affected.

The Barzan plant had recently resumed operations

QatarEnergy reported that production at Barzan remained completely shut down since December 2025 due to urgent maintenance needs.

Subsequently, the facility restarted its activities just two days before the explosion and fire occurred, a fact that is now part of the elements that will be evaluated within the ongoing investigation.

The Barzan plant plays a significant role within Qatar’s gas supply infrastructure and is part of the energy complex located in Ras Laffan, one of the country’s main industrial centers linked to the production and processing of natural gas.

The fire was quickly brought under control

QatarEnergy also stated that its emergency response teams acted immediately alongside Qatar Civil Defense to completely extinguish the fire.

Inspections are currently underway to assess the extent of the damage to both the Barzan facilities and nearby infrastructure.

The company emphasized that QatarEnergy’s liquefied natural gas plants, the port of Ras Laffan, logistics operations and export capacity continue to operate without disruption from the incident.

Investigation underway to determine the causes

While technical work is underway, QatarEnergy confirmed the opening of a thorough investigation aimed at establishing the origin of the explosion and fire.

Authorities and specialized teams will analyze the existing operating conditions at the time of the restart of production, as well as the condition of the equipment involved in the emergency.

For now, the priority remains focused on caring for the affected workers, assessing the damage, and fully clarifying the events that occurred at the Barzan plant in the Ras Laffan Industrial City.
