Peter Zebedee he will be the next CEO of Suncor Energy and has the backing of Elliott Investment Management to take over the company’s leadership in April 2027, when Rich Kruger steps down from his current roles as president and chief executive officer.
The investment fund, which holds a significant stake in Suncor, believes that Zebedee has the operational experience and business knowledge necessary to continue the strategy developed during Kruger’s tenure.
Peter Zebedee will take over the leadership of Suncor in 2027
As of April 2027, Rich Kruger will step down as president and CEO of Suncor to become executive vice chairman of the board, Peter Zebedee will then assume the executive leadership of the Canadian energy company.
Elliott, for its part, believes the succession will allow for continuity in management and the operational momentum achieved in recent years. The firm also emphasized that Kruger’s continued presence within the organization will facilitate the transfer of experience during this new phase.
Furthermore, the investor’s support highlights Zebedee’s operational track record and his insider knowledge of Suncor. These factors are considered key to executing the company’s strategic priorities following the CEO change.
Suncor seeks to maintain its operational strategy
During Kruger’s tenure, Suncor focused its efforts on improving its safety standards and strengthening a culture oriented towards operational excellence. Elliott also attributed progress in generating value for shareholders to this period.
In addition, Kruger, Zebedee and the management team presented earlier this year a three-year business plan intended to extend the progress achieved by the company.
The leadership transition therefore presents a scenario of continuity; Kruger will retain a presence in the management structure while Zebedee will assume executive responsibility for developing the strategic plan.
Elliott supports the executive succession
Elliott noted that Kruger’s experience will continue to add value from his new position and will allow the maintenance of the operational standards established during his tenure.
At the same time, the firm considers Peter Zebedee as the right successor to lead Suncor due to his operational experience and knowledge of the company’s activities.
The statement is particularly relevant given Elliott’s position as a significant investor in the company. The firm manages approximately $79.8 billion in assets, according to figures corresponding to December 31, 2025.
With the succession defined several months in advance, Suncor will have a period to prepare the handover between the two executives while continuing to develop its three-year plan; the formal change of CEO is scheduled for April 2027.
