OMV Petrom reinforced Petrobrazi’s electrical infrastructure to integrate new SAF, renewable diesel and green hydrogen capabilities, OMV Petrom allocated approximately 115 million euros to modernize the electrical infrastructure of Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, the investment is part of the transformation program for this facility and will strengthen the supply needed for both current operations and new energy projects.
The company, considered the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe, is preparing Petrobrazi to incorporate new capabilities related to lower-carbon fuels. These include the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and green hydrogen.
OMV Petrom modernizes Petrobrazi’s electrical infrastructure
As part of the project, OMV Petrom built a high-voltage power line directly connected to a Transelectrica substation. The works also included a new generation electrical substation and another facility for distributing energy within the complex. The new infrastructure also incorporates Blue GIS technology, a modern electrical switching system designed to reduce the environmental impact associated with this type of equipment.
Petrobrazi also has its own power generation unit, currently, this facility covers almost all of the refinery’s electricity demand, which helps to maintain the continuity of its industrial processes.

The investment prepares for the production of SAF and green hydrogen
Furthermore, modernization will allow the projects to be connected, OMV Petrom it is currently being developed at Petrobrazi. Among them is a unit designed to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable HVO diesel, in addition to new production capabilities green hydrogen.
In addition to this 7 MW photovoltaic energy project which is currently under construction within the refinery. Its commissioning will complement the existing energy infrastructure and allow for a greater proportion of renewable electricity to be incorporated into the industrial complex.
Through this investment, we are strengthening Petrobrazi’s electrical infrastructure to support both current refinery operations and new capabilities under development, including the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), as well as green hydrogen projects.

OMV Petrom is moving forward with the transformation of Petrobrazi
Thus, investment in electrical infrastructure becomes one of the key elements supporting Petrobrazi’s transformation program. The new grid must meet the needs of both conventional refining and the increased energy demand associated with renewable fuel projects.
The refinery maintains a significant position in the supply of fuels and petroleum products in Romania, the incorporation of SAF, HVO, green hydrogen and photovoltaic generation now expands the energy role of the facility.
For OMV Petrom, having an electrical infrastructure capable of responding to these new loads will be key to incorporating the capabilities that are currently under development without affecting the continuity of existing operations at Petrobrazi.
