The transaction expands its offering in refining, petrochemicals, hydrogen, and renewable fuels through the integration of catalysts, automation, and digital solutions.
Honeywell Technologies completed the acquisition of Johnson Matthey‘s Catalyst Technologies business for £1.325 billion in an all-cash transaction that strengthens its position in the market for refining, petrochemical, and low-emission fuel production technologies.
With this incorporation, the company expands its process technology portfolio by integrating catalyst development capabilities with its industrial automation, process control, and digital solutions platforms, offering a more complete proposal for energy and industrial plant operators.
According to Honeywell, the acquisition also increases its global installed base and expands opportunities for technical services and support throughout the asset lifecycle.
Catalysts and automation on a single platform
The acquired business brings technologies used in processes where catalysts play a fundamental role in increasing the efficiency of chemical reactions, improving production yields, and reducing energy consumption.
These solutions have applications in refining units, petrochemical production, hydrogen, renewable fuels, and highly complex industrial processes.
The integration will allow combining Honeywell’s process design, catalysts, instrumentation, and digital tools within a single technology platform.
Honeywell accelerates its portfolio reorganization
The transaction is part of a strategy initiated in recent years to focus the business on higher value-added industrial technologies.
Since 2023, Honeywell has completed acquisitions totaling approximately $11.5 billion, incorporating companies specializing in automation, industrial cybersecurity, compressor control, LNG technologies, lithium-ion battery monitoring, and industrial pumping equipment.
At the same time, the company has executed several divestitures and corporate spin-offs, including the separation of Honeywell Aerospace as an independent company and the spin-off of Solstice Advanced Materials, orienting its structure towards specialized businesses with greater growth potential.
Solutions for a more efficient energy industry
The incorporation of Catalyst Technologies expands Honeywell’s capacity to address projects related to traditional and low-emission fuels.
Catalysts developed by Johnson Matthey are involved in hydrogen production, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), petrochemicals, refining, and carbon capture processes—markets where chemical efficiency is crucial for reducing operating costs and emissions.
Honeywell believes that the combination of these capabilities will allow it to offer integrated solutions that improve the operational and energy performance of industrial facilities.
