The Sodegaura biomass power plant, owned by Osaka Gas, is scheduled to begin commercial operations between April and September 2025, after suffering delays due to a fire in one of its silos in January 2023. The fire occurred during a test run at the plant located in Chiba Prefecture.
New biomass plant safety strategies
Osaka Gas reported last July 3 that the cause was the combustion of wood pellets stored for more than six months in two silos. To prevent future incidents, the company has implemented several safety measures, including a nitrogen injection system near the four silos to control the temperature.
In addition, other preventive measures have been taken, such as removing pellets from the silos every three months to reduce their temperature. The frequency of this action may vary depending on weather conditions and other circumstances.
The plant was originally intended to start commercial operations by the end of February 2023. However, the fire caused a postponement. Osaka Gas faced major challenges in extinguishing the fire, which was finally brought under control in May 2023, four months after the the start of the fire. . In April of this year, the company completed the removal of the remaining pellets that had swollen as they absorbed the water used to extinguish the fire.
