Denise West is moving toward a decisive stage in Egypt, where Eni is working alongside BP and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) to reach a final investment decision (FID) in the coming months. The Italian company confirmed on August 25 that the goal is to bring this offshore gas discovery into production less than two years after the investment decision is made.
The proposed timeline positions the discovery among the gas developments with the greatest potential for accelerated execution in the Eastern Mediterranean. With around 2 Tcf of gas initially in place and a location less than 10 kilometers from existing infrastructure, the project has conditions that could allow Eni and BP to significantly shorten the cycle between discovery and first production.
A 2 Tcf Discovery Ten Kilometers From Operating Infrastructure
Denise West was discovered in April 2026 during the offshore drilling campaign launched in October 2025 in the Temsah concession in the Eastern Mediterranean. Preliminary estimates indicate around 2 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas initially in place (GIIP), equivalent to approximately 56.6 billion cubic meters, along with 130 million barrels of associated condensates, according to Eni data.
The location is strategic: the field lies 70 km offshore, in water depths of 95 meters, and less than 10 km from existing infrastructure. This proximity is what makes accelerated development feasible, eliminating the need to build evacuation infrastructure from scratch.
Petrobel Operates the Asset: Eni and BP Each Hold 50%
The project’s ownership structure is equally divided. Eni operates the Denise development concession within the Temsah block with a 50% interest, while BP retains the remaining 50%. The asset is managed through Petrobel, the operating company of the joint venture between Eni and EGPC, with decades of experience in Egypt’s offshore sector.
The Temsah field has been in production since 2001. Denise West features a high-quality sandstone reservoir with a net pay of approximately 50 meters, with characteristics analogous to the neighboring field, reducing technical uncertainty surrounding its development.
Eni Deploys $8.5 Billion in Egypt and Plans 230 Wells
Denise West is the latest component of a much broader investment strategy. According to data published by Euronews, Eni has committed a total investment of $8.5 billion in Egypt, with plans to drill 30 exploration wells and 200 development wells. Through its subsidiary IEOC, the company was producing around 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) in 2025.
Eni’s Egyptian portfolio includes the Zohr gas superfield — the largest in the Mediterranean when it was discovered in 2015 — and the Cronos project in Cyprus, with which Denise West gas Egypt shares infrastructure synergies. The strategy aims to position Egypt as a gas export hub for Europe within the context of the post-Russia energy restructuring.
The Fast-Track Model: From Exploration to Gas in Less Than Three Years
If the FID is reached in the coming months — before the end of 2026 — and production begins within the two-year timeframe, the Denise West gas Egypt project could be producing gas by 2028. This would represent an exceptionally short development cycle for an offshore asset, made possible by the reuse of pipelines, platforms, and onshore connections already installed in the Temsah block.
“Similar to the nearby Temsah field, which has been in production since 2001, it features a sandstone reservoir with excellent quality,” Eni stated in its April discovery announcement. The combination of reservoir quality and proximity to infrastructure is what makes Denise West gas Egypt an ideal candidate for fast-track development. The Temsah concession was renewed for 20 years in July 2025 through a binding agreement between Eni, EGPC, and the Egyptian Gas Holding Company (EGAS), providing the project with a stable contractual framework through the mid-2040s. Follow Inspenet’s coverage of upstream projects.
