During World Port Days Rotterdam, Damen Shipyards Group presented its latest decarbonization advances to accelerate the energy transition in the shipbuilding industry. The company has three cutting-edge vessels docked at the Innovation Dock to validate the technological maturity of the Dutch maritime sector. According to group representatives, current technology allows for the operation of zero-emission vessels, meaning the primary focus now lies in deploying the necessary infrastructure, regulations, and financing schemes.
Technological innovation and sustainability at the Port of Rotterdam
Consequently, the technical exhibition includes operational models such as the all-electric tug Aqua Pollux, designed for pollutant-free port operations. Additionally, the Blue Amsterdam water bus demonstrates the viability of electrification in river-based public transport. Given this reality, firm executives emphasize that pilot projects have proven their operational effectiveness, making it essential to move toward mass-scale commercial adoption.
In this context, Martin Bloem, Vice President of Damen Shipyards, highlighted the importance of establishing a cooperation framework between the government, port authorities, and private companies. According to the executive, such a strategic alliance will allow the Netherlands to consolidate its international leadership in marine sustainability. To achieve this, the corporation advocates for public-private investments focused on the deployment of shared charging points, shore power, and integrated energy infrastructure.
Furthermore, Damen has formally requested the extension of the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) to the workboat segment. Through this mechanism, the company proposes that revenues collected from emission fees be directly reinvested into the fleet’s technological transition. Simultaneously, the company supports the European Industrial Maritime Strategy by promoting the Workboat Alliance, an initiative aimed at strengthening the continent’s competitiveness in port operations, waterways, and marine infrastructure.
In addition to electrification developments, the company has integrated solutions aimed at strengthening security and resilience in the maritime environment. For this reason, Damen collaborates in a coordinated manner with the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Ministry of Defence, and the firm Fugro within the framework of the North Sea Infrastructure Protection Program (PBNI).
Finally, this inter-institutional cooperation uses the vessel Galatea to conduct continuous surveillance and inspection of strategic assets. By deploying this combined capability, public and private actors demonstrate how naval technology contributes simultaneously to decarbonization and the defense of strategic maritime space.
