The FPSO BW Opal achieved a major operational breakthrough after successfully completing the Intermediate Performance Test (IPT), a key stage in the commissioning program of the Barossa LNG project, operated by Santos off the northern coast of Australia.
The validation confirms that the main production, processing and auxiliary service systems of the floating unit operate in an integrated manner and maintain stable performance under real production conditions.
The test confirms the integration of critical systems
During the commissioning phase of an FPSO, integration tests allow verification that all systems work in a coordinated manner before reaching full operation.
In this case, BW Offshore reported that the BW Opal successfully met the requirements established for the Intermediate Performance Test. The result demonstrates that the gas processing equipment, utility systems, and support infrastructure are operating according to the expected parameters.
The assessment represents a significant step forward for the development of Barossa LNG, considered one of the most important energy projects currently underway in Australia.
BW Opal maintains gas production during start-up
Following the resumption of operations in early May, the FPSO has maintained gas production and export as part of the progressive capacity increase program.
Likewise, BW Offshore noted that the operational activities are carried out in close coordination with Santos, who is responsible for the operation of the Barossa LNG project.
This joint effort seeks to ensure that the transition to the commercial stage takes place under safe conditions and with consistent performance levels.
The project is nearing operational completion
BW Offshore remains focused on completing outstanding commissioning activities as it moves towards the so-called practical completion of the project.
Once that stage is reached, the long-term firm contract period associated with the FPSO BW Opal will officially begin.
The company emphasized that the priority remains ensuring safe operations, production stability, and system reliability during the next phases of the project.
BW Offshore strengthens its presence in floating solutions
With approximately four decades of experience in offshore operations, BW Offshore develops floating production solutions for the global energy industry.
The company operates a fleet of FPSOs and also participates in floating wind energy initiatives, supplying infrastructure adapted to the needs of evolving energy markets.
The completion of the BW Opal Intermediate Performance Test strengthens the progress of the Barossa LNG project and brings the facility closer to its long-term contractual stage in one of the most important natural gas developments in the Asia-Pacific region.
