Maritime company Yinson GreenTech will begin commercial trials of its all-electric cargo ship, the Hydromover , in Singapore. These trial periods are intended to assess the ship’s performance in real-world conditions, opening the door for its use in large-scale commercial operations in the future.
The Hydromover, an electric cargo ship
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore ( MPA ) has set a goal: ” By mid-2030, all port vessels must be fully electric, using B100 biofuels or be compatible with fuels such as hydrogen.” The Hydromover answers this call with its zero-emission operation, becoming a benchmark for future electric cargo vessels.
The electric vessel has demonstrated the capacity to transport up to 80 tons of cargo , operating without generating carbon emissions and with an operational efficiency superior to other vessels on the international market.
Furthermore, Yinson GreenTech has revealed that six potential partners have submitted letters of intent to charter the Hydromover during operational trials, with a view to electrifying their fleets in the future. These partners include Lita Ocean and DM Sea Logistics , who are part of the “Goal Zero” initiative, as well as OPL Services , Kanlian Ferry , RW Marine Services , and Tian San Shipping . Together, these companies manage a fleet of over 200 vessels, presenting a huge opportunity for conversion to electric solutions in the coming years.
“These commercial trials are just the beginning,” a Yinson spokesperson commented. “ We are convinced that this project will be instrumental in the transition to electric mobility in the maritime sector, not only in Singapore, but also across the region .” With a fully electric model, the cargo ship plans to reduce the carbon footprint, and perform quieter and more cost-effective operations.

The collaboration between Yinson and its partners reinforces their commitment to leading the transition towards a more sustainable future in maritime transport. As testing continues, the Hydromover is set to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and setting new standards for clean maritime mobility.
