Repsol has begun distributing its renewable fuels in Antarctica, working closely with the Spanish Army. Spanish Army. These fuels are essential for the operation of the “Gabriel de Castilla” base, providing the energy necessary to convert this place into a habitable space during the four months of the Antarctic expedition.
Throughout this season, a group of 13 military personnel will reside at the base, dedicated to support and cooperation tasks with the Ministry of Science and Innovation, thus facilitating the development of various scientific projects during the southern hemisphere summer. Renewable fuels supplied by the company, through its Repsol Technology Lab innovation center, are essential to cope with the extreme temperatures that can drop to -30 °C on Deception Island, located in the South Shetland archipelago.
Energy from renewable fuels
To power the base, 2,000 liters of 100% renewable diesel have been used, offering a sustainable alternative that does not require modifications to existing infrastructure. The Army, in charge of the management of the “Gabriel de Castilla” base, has emphasized its commitment to sustainability and the reduction of environmental impact, aligning itself with the principles of the Antarctic Treaty and the Madrid Protocol. This commitment was reflected in the achievement of the Aenor Certification of the Environmental Management System according to ISO 14001 in 2010.
Repsol not only focuses on sustainability in Antarctica, but also has ambitious plans to expand the availability of its 100% renewable fuels. This year, the company plans to increase its supply points in the Iberian Peninsula. It is also about to inaugurate in Cartagena the first plant dedicated to the production of these fuels from waste, and in Puertollano, it will transform an existing unit to incorporate advanced technology for the same purpose.
