TotalEnergies has entered into agreements with developer RWE to acquire a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, which fulfills the development in the Netherlands with a capacity of 795 MW of power.

Hydrogen production to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The renewable electricity production obtained from this project will be used to power 350 MW electrolyzer projects, producing some 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will contribute to the decarbonization of TotalEnergies’ refineries in Northern Europe.

The company plans to use the electricity generated by OranjeWind to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis. This process will help reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 400,000 tons annually, replacing conventional hydrogen used in its refineries. Together, these efforts align with TotalEnergies’ goal to decrease its net greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.

The OranjeWind offshore wind farm

Located some 53 km off the Dutch coast in the North Sea, the OranjeWind project was awarded to RWE in 2022 as part of the Hollandse Kust West VII tender. This project will not only generate green energy and hydrogen, but will also contribute to the stability of the Dutch electricity grid through the use of electric boilers and battery storage. Construction of OranjeWind will begin in 2026 and it is expected to be fully operational in early 2028.

Gaz Renewables & Power President Stephane Michel and Bernard Pinatel, President of TotalEnergiesRefining & Chemicals, expressed their enthusiasm for this collaboration with RWE, noting that OranjeWind will enable the development of green hydrogen production needed to decarbonize refineries in Northern Europe. This project exemplifies TotalEnergies’ pioneering role in Europe’s energy transition, particularly in the integration of offshore wind energy and green hydrogen production.

For his part, Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, emphasized that the Netherlands is a key strategic market for the growth of its renewable energy portfolio. With TotalEnergies as a partner, RWE will be able to realize its first offshore wind project in the Netherlands, which will enable the full integration of the OranjeWind system.
