Engineering firm McDermott has successfully completed engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning ( EPCIC ) operations in the Gulf of Mexico. This project has been developed for Shell Offshore , and will allow oil production to begin on the subsea infrastructure of the Whale field.

The large-scale EPCIC project

Since it was awarded in 2021, the development of the project has represented a challenge both in technological innovation and operational coordination. The execution required the deployment of specialized resources, including the North Ocean 102 vessel and the modernized Amazon vessel. These teams facilitated the installation of approximately 50 kilometers of pipes and 15 kilometers of umbilicals at depths close to 2,800 meters.

The vessel Amazon played a leading role, after installing five 3,350-metre-long steel catenary pipes. This event demonstrates its high tensile capacity and strengthens its relevance in offshore subsea infrastructure projects. In addition, the use of automated systems allowed for a more efficient, productive and safe execution.

The success of this operation was due to the coordination between different McDermott offices and rigorous safety protocols. Mahesh Swaminathan, senior vice president of subsea and floating facilities for the company, mentioned the collaboration with Shell as a determining factor.

Shell Whale and its progress in energy production

Located 200 miles from Houston, this platform incorporates remote monitoring technology to optimize its operations. Its design prioritizes efficiency and sustainability, contributing to higher-performance energy production.

With the completion of this challenging project, the company reaffirms its position as a benchmark in engineering solutions for the offshore industry, driving the evolution of submarine infrastructure globally.
