Shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha ( “K” LINE ) will begin trials of the NexusWave connectivity service from Inmarsat Maritime , a subsidiary of Viasat . This service aims to improve real-time communications between ships and nearby shores, providing a continuous flow of information and high-speed global connectivity.

Launched in May this year, the ship uses a unified network that integrates multiple technologies, including Ka-band Global Xpress ( GX ) satellites, low orbit ( LEO ) networks, and LTE services . These technologies enable stable and fast maritime communications even on the most challenging routes, which is vital for modern maritime transport.
K LINE CEO Akihiro Fujimaru stressed that the high demand for data on board, both for safety and crew well-being, requires robust solutions. NexusWave ’s infrastructure can deliver that service, providing greater operational efficiency, and aiding the digitalization and automation of fleets . Fujimaru added that stable and fast connectivity is essential to keeping sailors connected to their families, a core value the company wants to fulfill.
Inmarsat Maritime President Ben Palmer underlined the importance of this collaboration, highlighting that NexusWave is a “ secure by design ” service, offering enterprise-grade firewall protection, which strengthens trust in the service. As “K” LINE moves forward with its digitalisation initiatives, these trials establish solid steps in the integration of advanced technologies into maritime operations.
