Revolution Wind completed the installation of its 65 wind turbines off the coast of the United States, with this phase completed, the offshore wind farm of 704 MW the project, developed by Ørsted and Skyborn Renewables, is progressing with commissioning activities before reaching commercial operation. Currently, teams are continuing to work on bringing the infrastructure online. The project delivered its first electricity to the New England grid in the spring and has since been progressively increasing its generation, once operating at full capacity, the offshore wind farm will be able to produce electricity equivalent to the consumption of more than 350,000 New England households.
Revolution Wind enters its final commissioning stage
For its part, Ørsted confirmed that commissioning activities are continuing at the various project facilities. The company expects to reach commercial operation by the end of 2026; the completion of assembly marks the end of an extensive offshore construction phase. The first of the 65 turbines Siemens Gamesa SG 11.0-200 SD it was installed in September 2024, months after the first foundation of the park was laid. The development also includes a contracted capacity of400 MW for Rhode Island and 304 MW for Connecticut this distribution completes the 704 MW planned for Revolution Wind and will allow the incorporation of new offshore wind generation into the electrical system of the northeastern United States.
The wind farm consists of 65 Siemens Gamesa turbines
Each of the wind turbines installed corresponds to the mode lSiemens Gamesa SG 11.0-200 DD, an 11 MW platform intended for the offshore wind market. The installation of the turbines is part of a larger offshore system that includes foundations, marine substations, and cables responsible for transporting the generated electricity to the onshore grid.
During construction, Revolution Wind mobilized skilled workers, vessels, and ports in the northeastern United States to carry out the various installation phases. With all 65 units now installed, work is focused on completing testing, commissioning, and integrating the different systems before reaching the planned commercial capacity.
A 704 MW wind power project for New England
Besides, Revolution Wind it is designed to primarily supply Rhode Island y Connecticut in two northeastern US markets that will receive the electricity produced by the park, the project began supplying power to the regional grid before reaching its full installed capacity, this way, the increase in generation is being implemented gradually as final activities progress.
The completion of the wind turbine assembly comes after several delays during construction, these included additional work related to onshore infrastructure and pauses that temporarily affected offshore activities. Now, with all the turbines in position, Revolution Wind is approaching the final phase of its development, the next objective will be to complete commissioning and bring the 704 MW of offshore wind energy to its projected commercial capacity.
