Elomatic Maritime Technologies and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems ( tkMS ) have signed a landmark contract to design the new icebreaker Polarstern 2. Both companies are looking to replace the existing Polarstern and advance scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic.
Research behind the icebreaker Polarstern 2
Elomatic’s role will be to provide technical consultancy during the construction of the vessel. This collaboration with tkMS aims to create an icebreaker that has the ability to break through thick ice, and serve as an advanced platform for scientific research.
The new Polarstern will be designed with an environmentally friendly propulsion system , integrating clean fuels and high-performance batteries. With the ability to penetrate ice up to 1.8 metres thick, the icebreaker will become the most advanced tool for Arctic and Antarctic researchers.
Furthermore, this project highlights tkMS’ contribution to the civil sector , applying its experience in building submarines and surface vessels to a polar research project. The company has over 185 years of history, and is proud to offer innovative technological solutions that address maritime challenges, while having a positive impact on science and the global environment.
Elomatic has been instrumental in the development of other innovative maritime solutions, such as Canada’s national polar icebreaker. With the contract for the new Polarstern, the company strengthens its position as a leader in icebreaking vessel design, combining its technical expertise with a strong commitment to sustainability and the advancement of science.
The new Polarstern project represents an important moment for Elomatic, as it is the largest single vessel design contract in the company’s 55-year history. We are very excited to continue our collaboration with our partners at tkMS and look forward to further contributing to the creation of this innovative polar research vessel, which will be built in our home city.
