The Chilean company Colbún officially inaugurated the Horizonte wind farm , located in the Antofagasta region, becoming the largest wind farm operator in Chile. With an investment exceeding $900 million, this wind farm has an installed capacity of 816 megawatts, enough to supply clean energy to more than 715,000 homes.
Horizonte Wind Farm: the largest in Chile
Located 130 kilometers northeast of the city of Taltal, the Horizonte project represents the largest energy project in Colbún’s history. The plant increases the region’s wind power capacity and makes Antofagasta the epicenter of wind power generation in the country. Horizonte will allow for an average annual generation of 2,450 GWh and will contribute to avoiding the emission of nearly 500,000 tons of CO2 per year.
The farm has 140 wind turbines spread across a surface area of 454 hectares. Construction began in December 2021 and required the use of more than 84,000 cubic meters of concrete and 8,540 tons of steel. The complex was connected to the National Electricity System, with expansion plans that could increase its installed capacity by up to 20%.
During its construction, the project generated 1,200 jobs, with a strong focus on regional hiring and female participation. Through the Horizonteduca program , more than 150 students received training in renewable energy , while other programs promoted the appreciation of local archaeological heritage.

With this project, Colbún surpasses 5,000 MW of total installed capacity, of which more than 1,000 MW corresponds to wind energy . The company consolidates its leadership in northern Chile, especially in the supply of renewable energy for the mining industry. Horizonte is presented as a key step in the consolidation of a sustainable energy matrix for the country. Watch the video of the wind farm’s inauguration below.
