The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) published its eVTOL (CAA) published its eVTOL Delivery Model, setting out a regulatory roadmap for enabling commercial flights of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft before the end of 2028.
The document reinforces the UK’s global reputation for air safety, while supporting innovation and the deployment of new technologies, aligning with the government’s goal of leading Advanced Air Mobility.
Certification, operations and safety standards
The model reaffirms SC-VTOL as the basis for certification, considered the most demanding safety standards worldwide for eVTOL aircraft, and maintains close coordination with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The CAA confirmed that day and night operations under visual and instrument flight rules (VFR/IFR) will be allowed from day one, provided that pilots and aircraft are properly certified, allowing reliable operations in a variety of weather conditions.
Vertical Aerospace and the eVTOL ecosystem
Vertical Aerospace welcomed the publication of the model, noting that it provides regulatory clarity in key areas such as training, airfields and infrastructure. The company actively collaborates with the CAA in working groups related to certification, operations and hybrid propulsion systems.
According to the company, this framework positions the UK as a competitive and scalable environment for the development of the eVTOL ecosystem, in parallel with initiatives such as airport expansion and the development of vertiport networks.
