On 25 October 2024, Erik Thun Group celebrated the launch of its second Lake Vanern Max generation dry cargo vessel at the Scheepswerf Ferus Smit BV shipyard in the Netherlands.

Named “Spiken”, this plug-in hybrid vessel was christened by Susana Paulo in a ceremony that brought together representatives of the MF Shipping Group, the shipyard and Erik Thun.

Features of the hybrid vessel “Spiken”

With an overall length of 89 meters , a beam of 13.35 meters and a draft of 6.24 meters, the Spiken stands out for its cargo capacity of up to 5,100 deadweight tons and a cargo hold volume of 206,000 cubic feet. In addition, it is certified as Ice Class 1B, making it suitable for operations in icy environments – a significant advantage for routes in cold climates.

This vessel is also equipped with a large diameter propeller within a nozzle and its design allows for greater thrust at low speeds, optimizing fuel consumption and reducing demand on the main engine.

Its hybrid system includes a battery pack that minimises the use of auxiliary engines and enables zero-emission, noise-free operations when docked, which is beneficial for port communities and ecosystems.

The hybrid design also ensures stable distribution of electrical power, improving operational efficiency.

The launch of the “Spiken” follows the recent debut of the MV Lidan in early October, reinforcing Erik Thun’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability in its fleet of plug-in hybrid vessels .
