SSEN Transmission signed a long-term framework agreement with Sumitomo Electric Industries and Van Oord Offshore Wind UK for the engineering, supply, transport, and installation of future high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable systems, essential infrastructure to expand the electricity transmission capacity of northern Scotland.
The agreement will support strategic interconnection projects, including the future Shetland 2 link, in addition to providing supply chain stability necessary to develop new subsea connections that allow for the transport of larger volumes of electricity from renewable sources.
HVDC Transmission Stands Out in Renewable Energy Expansion
The rapid growth of offshore wind generation is shifting the challenge from electricity production to its efficient transport. In this context, HVDC systems have established themselves as the most suitable technological solution for transmitting large blocks of power over long distances with lower electrical losses than conventional alternating current networks.
HVDC subsea links enable the connection of generation centers located offshore or in remote regions with major consumption centers, facilitating the integration of new renewable capacities without compromising the stability of the electrical system.
SSEN Transmission: Agreement Boosts Industrial Capacity
Beyond the development of a specific project, the agreement establishes a collaboration framework that provides long-term visibility to manufacturers, contractors, and investors.
This type of contract favors the planning of industrial investments, the expansion of manufacturing plants, and the training of highly specialized personnel, reducing the risks associated with the simultaneous execution of multiple transmission projects.
Sumitomo Electric’s investment in a new HVDC cable manufacturing plant in Nigg exemplifies how demand predictability can stimulate the development of national industrial capabilities and strengthen supply chain resilience.
Collaboration Between Manufacturers and Contractors Accelerates Execution
The success of large subsea transmission projects depends on close coordination between those who design and manufacture electrical systems and those who execute complex offshore installation operations.
The combination of SSEN Transmission’s and Sumitomo Electric’s technological expertise with Van Oord’s maritime capabilities allows for the integration of manufacturing, logistics, and installation under a common strategy, reducing uncertainties during the execution of future subsea links.
This collaborative model also facilitates process standardization, optimizes the planning of specialized resources, and improves efficiency in projects whose technical complexity demands multidisciplinary coordination from the early stages.
