SLB announced that its OneSubsea joint venture secured an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract from BP to supply a subsea pumping system for the Thunder Horse project, one of the most significant deepwater developments in the Gulf of Mexico.

The award strengthens the collaboration between both companies in the offshore segment and expands the implementation of standardized subsea solutions already part of the Kaskida and Tiber projects.

A new contract to boost deepwater production

As part of the agreement, SLB OneSubsea will be responsible for supplying the subsea pumping system along with comprehensive project management, engineering activities, equipment manufacturing, and the necessary testing for its commissioning.

The Thunder Horse project is located in one of the most important production zones in the Gulf of Mexico and is part of BP’s strategy to maximize resource utilization in deepwater fields.

Likewise, the use of a common technology platform across Thunder Horse, Kaskida, and Tiber will simplify execution processes and reduce the time associated with the delivery of critical equipment.

Standardization gains prominence in offshore development

The oil and gas industry has increased the adoption of standardized subsea systems due to the benefits they offer in terms of operational efficiency, risk reduction, and cost optimization.

In this context, the subsea pumping solution developed by SLB OneSubsea aims to improve production flow from the seabed to processing facilities, facilitating more efficient recovery of available resources.

The repetition of the same technological design across multiple projects also favors supply chain planning and accelerates the execution of new initiatives in complex deepwater environments.

How does subsea pumping boost deepwater production?

According to Mads Hjelmeland, CEO of SLB OneSubsea, subsea pumping plays a fundamental role in extending the production of existing fields and increasing recovery levels.

The solutions developed by the company are aimed at increasing field performance through systems capable of operating in demanding conditions and at great depths, where equipment efficiency is crucial for project profitability.

Furthermore, the company highlighted that its approach based on standardized subsea technologies allows for faster implementation of new facilities and improved overall performance of offshore assets.

An alliance that continues to expand

The Thunder Horse award adds to the contracts previously secured by SLB OneSubsea for the Kaskida and Tiber developments, consolidating a strategic relationship with BP in the subsea production segment.

With this new addition, the company strengthens its presence in the offshore technology market and advances in the implementation of solutions designed to increase production, optimize hydrocarbon recovery, and improve operational efficiency in deepwater projects.
