The LNG carrier Eduard Toll recently completed a voyage from the Arctic to China, completing the journey in just 18 days. This voyage is notable for having been conducted mostly autonomously, although it required assistance in certain areas of the East Siberian Sea from the icebreaker Sibir, GCaptain reports.

This route through northern Russia represents a significant reduction in distance and time compared to other traditional routes. For example, the usual detour via the Cape of Good Hope, necessary due to conflicts in the Red Sea, takes at least six weeks. In contrast, passage through the Arctic is completed in only 18 days, providing a more efficient alternative for shipping maritime transport to Asia.

Finally, it is expected that Russia will continue to use this Arctic route for future crude oil shipments. Recently, Russian authorities have granted permits to sail in this region to three Aframax tankers under the Gabonese flag: Korolev ProspectVernadsky Prospect and Olympic Prospect. Each of these vessels has the capacity to transport up to 800,000 barrels of crude oil.
