PETRONAS will incorporate agentic AI into its myPROdata platform to streamline the assessment of oil opportunities and investment decisions in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company, PETRONAS, is strengthening the use of artificial intelligence in its upstream operations to facilitate the analysis of exploration and production opportunities and accelerate investment decisions.

Through Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), PETRONAS reached an agreement with Iraya Energies to incorporate agentic AI capabilities into myPROdata, its digital platform dedicated to information related to Malaysia’s hydrocarbon resources.

The initiative aims to provide investors and industry companies with a more efficient way to analyze oil assets, from the early stages of exploration through to assessing their commercial potential.

Agentic AI is coming to the myPROdata platform

Currently, PETRONAS myPROdata provides access to subsurface and surface data for exploration blocks, discovered resources, and fields that are already in production in Malaysia.

With the update, the platform will combine geological, geophysical, and engineering information with agentic AI tools capable of autonomously analyzing and correlating different data sources.

In this way, users will be able to examine large sets of technical information to identify prospective areas, assess resources, and study potential development alternatives.

Likewise, the technology will make it possible to extend the analysis to the commercial viability of exploration and production opportunities, a determining factor before committing capital to new upstream projects.

PETRONAS uses AI to accelerate upstream investment

The project also has an economic objective. PETRONAS aims to use the combination of technical data and artificial intelligence to reduce the time required to study opportunities and make decisions on oil and gas investments.

According to Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Bacho Pilong, Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management, the platform will enable Malaysia’s upstream opportunities to be assessed more quickly and with greater confidence.

The company aims to attract approximately 50 to 60 billion Malaysian ringgits per year in upstream investment.

At the same time, PETRONAS wants to reduce from 100 to 50 months the period between a discovery and first hydrocarbon production.

This reduction would cut in half one of the fundamental cycles in the development of new oil and gas resources.

Iraya Energies will integrate the AI technology

Iraya Energies, for its part, will assume the role of lead integrator for the consortium in charge of the project. The company will have to establish the technical, commercial, and security foundations needed to incorporate artificial intelligence capabilities and subsequently facilitate the program’s rollout.

The planned architecture will make it possible to connect data from different upstream disciplines within a single analysis environment. This can facilitate the technical assessment of assets before moving on to development and investment decisions.

Malaysia digitizes the assessment of its upstream resources

For PETRONAS, incorporating AI into myPROdata is part of its efforts to strengthen the investment ecosystem linked to oil and gas exploration and production in Malaysia.

The oil company operates through MPM in managing the country’s oil resources and seeks to ensure that greater availability of technical information facilitates the assessment of new opportunities.

In this context, artificial intelligence takes on a practical role: connecting geological, geophysical, and engineering data to shorten the process that precedes an investment.

With a more automated myPROdata platform, PETRONAS expects to improve access to upstream information and strengthen Malaysia’s competitiveness as a destination for exploration and production investment.
