NRG Energy evaluates a possible acquisition of Pleasants Power Station a West Virginia coal-fired power plant that is undergoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The company may also consider purchasing a stake in the asset, according to court filings.

The potential deal brings a major US power producer into a dispute already pitting owners, creditors, and the team tasked with restructuring the plant against each other. Furthermore, this interest arises as questions arise about whether Pleasants Power Station’s financial situation justifies continuing bankruptcy proceedings.

According to the court documents, NRG Energy it is among those interested in studying a potential transaction related to the power plant. For now, the company has not publicly confirmed that it will submit a final offer. The plant entered bankruptcy proceedings with approximately $13 million in cash however, its future financial prospects are one of the main points of contention between the parties involved.

For their part, All Energy, owner of Pleasants and led by the clean technology entrepreneur Simon Hodson Omnis requested a federal bankruptcy judge in Delaware to dismiss the reorganization proceedings. According to information submitted by Omnis to the court, Pleasants Power Station could generate at least $466 million in revenue over the next four years with an estimated operating profit of $286 million.

Bids for the power plant could reach up to $400 million

Furthermore, the value that potential buyers are reportedly assigning to the asset adds another dimension to the conflict. Omnis indicated to the court that the offers to acquire Pleasants Power Station range between 350 and 400 million dollars these figures far exceed the price paid for the installation in 2023.

The company maintains that a sale within that range would immediately cover all the estimated debt linked to the plant. Furthermore, Omnis stated that it attempted to resolve outstanding obligations through a payment of $76 million which was rejected.

The management of Pleasants Power Station divides the parties

The dispute also involves the restructuring team installed by the lenders this year. David Hindman, head of that team, stated in a court filing that Pleasants accumulated significant operating losses between 2023 and mid-2025. Among the problems cited were a lack of working capital, deferred maintenance, and generation shutdowns that impacted the facility’s performance.

Omnis rejects the allegations of wrongdoing and also questions whether the new management group had the authority to file for bankruptcy protection. Furthermore, the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission launched an investigation into the plant’s operations in October 2025, according to Hindman’s statement.

PJM’s payments support part of the financial debate

Pleasants Power Station also generated revenue through capacity payments PJM Interconnection the operator of a vast US electrical grid serving approximately 67 million people. These payments are relevant to the discussion of the plant’s economic prospects because they compensate for the availability of generating capacity within the electrical system.

While the legal process continues, the emergence of NRG Energy as a potential interested party broadens the options for the future of Pleasants Power Station. However, the available documentation only indicates that the company is evaluating a possible acquisition or stake and does not confirm that a formal offer has yet been made.
