Nexans has completed the manufacturing and Factory Acceptance Tests of the high-voltage submarine cable for the second Malta–Sicily interconnector, a key infrastructure to strengthen Malta’s energy security and expand its connection capacity to the European power grid.

The project includes an HVAC interconnection of approximately 122 km and 225 MW between Malta and Sicily, Italy. Within this scope, Nexans designed, manufactured, and will supply 100 km of submarine cable along with an additional 4 km of spare cable.

The cable is ready for installation

With the FAT tests now completed, the cable is ready for loading and subsequent installation. Validation was completed just over 13 months after the contract was signed, in line with the project’s planned schedule.

In addition, the new connection will be installed in parallel with the first Malta–Sicily link, commissioned in 2015. That first interconnector enabled Malta to connect to the European power grid for the first time and reduced dependence on the island’s electrical system.

More capacity for Malta’s power system

The commissioning of the second interconnector will increase the available capacity between Malta and Italy and provide greater flexibility to the national power system. It will also help diversify supply and improve the grid’s operational stability.

The cable will be installed using deep burial techniques, including Nexans’ Capjet system, to provide additional protection against subsea conditions and external risks throughout its service life.

A project supported by European funds

The infrastructure is funded by the European Union through the ERDF 2021–2027 programme for Malta. Once installed and commissioned, the second Malta–Sicily interconnector will support the country’s energy transition and strengthen its integration with the European electricity market.

Nexans, specialised in sustainable electrification, operates in 41 countries and develops cable solutions, accessories, and services for power grids, renewable energy, and critical infrastructure.
