NeuConnect completes half of the cabling between the UK andGermany 

NeuConnect surpasses halfway through cable laying and makes progress on the 1.4 GW electrical connection between the UK and Germany.

The project NeuConnect, designed to create the first direct electricity link between the UK and Germany, reached a new milestone by completing half of its cable installation program. The infrastructure, valued at 2.4 billion pounds sterling, he fainted 350 kilometers of terrestrial and submarine cabling installed along its approximately 700-kilometer route.

Thus, the progress of the project marks an important step in the construction of a new European electrical interconnection that will improve the exchange of energy between both countries and strengthen the stability of supply.

The interconnector will allow the transport of 1.4 GW between the two countries

NeuConnect is developed by an international consortium made up of South, Allianz, Kansai Electric Power and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) once operational, the system will be able to transport 1.4 GW of electricity in both directions, sufficient capacity to supply up to 1.5 million households.

This infrastructure will facilitate greater energy exchange between the British and German grids, bringing flexibility to electrical system and promoting better integration of the generation sources available in both markets.

Installation of the submarine cable is progressing

Construction began in the UK in July 2023, while work in Germany started in 2024, the main contractor, Prysmian, completed the laying work in British waters and continues with the installation of the submarine cable through Dutch waters before reaching Germany.

The advancement of the cabling represents one of the most complex phases of the project due to the length of the route and the necessary coordination between the different countries involved.

Siemens Energy develops converter stations

Parallel to the laying of cables, Siemens Energy Construction continues on the converter stations located in Grain Island, in the English county of Kent, and Wilhelmshaven, in Germany.

These facilities will be essential for connecting the interconnector to the national electricity transmission grid. The company has already delivered the transformers destined for both substations, a step that will allow progress to be made in the next phase of system integration.

When operational, NeuConnect will strengthen the energy infrastructure between the UK and Germany with a high-capacity transmission link designed to increase the resilience of European electricity grids and facilitate the cross-border flow of electricity.
