MOL expands the capacity of the Szarvas biogas plant to produce biomethane in Hungary

The MOL Group will adapt the Szarvas plant to inject seven million cubic meters of biomethane annually into the national gas grid.

The MOL Group is expanding the Szarvas biogas plant by incorporating an advanced biomethane unit. This new infrastructure will allow the gas obtained from organic waste to be purified and converted into a high-quality fuel. The main goal is to inject this resource directly into the national natural gas grid before the end of the current year.

Direct supply from the Szarvas biogas plant

The facility will process biogas to remove carbon dioxide along with other secondary compounds. This process will result in high-calorific biomethane that holds ISCC ecological certification. The plant will generate over seven million cubic meters of this resource annually. This volume is equivalent to the energy consumption of approximately 8,500 households in the region.

In this regard, the project relies on a robust network of local suppliers. The treatment plant processes over 40,000 tons of waste from the local meat industry each year. In addition, 53,000 tons of livestock waste from neighboring farms and approximately 18,000 tons of agricultural substrate are utilized. The MOL Group seeks to consolidate these ties with the agricultural sector to ensure a constant supply of raw material.

Therefore, I am confident that local production represents an enormous competitive advantage for Eastern Europe. This investment is part of the corporate strategic plan called SHAPE TOMORROW 2030+.

The company will use the knowledge gained from this Hungarian infrastructure to design future green fuel projects from scratch or evaluate asset acquisitions. Furthermore, management emphasizes that the initiative effectively responds to the current demand for sustainability and security of supply.
