GE Vernova will supply seven 4.2 MW wind turbines to Eurus Energy for the development of the Eurus Hiyamizutouge wind farm in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, GE Vernova, through its Onshore Wind Energy division, reached an agreement with Eurus Energy Holdings Corp. to supply seven wind turbines for a new wind farm in Japan. Each turbine will have a capacity of 4.2 MW and will be part of a project with a total capacity of 29.4 MW. The Eurus Hiyamizutouge wind farm will be located between the city of Mutsu and the village of Higashidori in Aomori Prefecture, the agreement also includes a two-year service contract, with the option to extend it for another two years.

Seven 4.2 MW turbines for the Hiyamizutouge project

GE Vernova will use turbines of its 4 MW platform, a technology that has accumulated more than two million operating hours, the equipment selected for the project will have a capacity of 4.2 MW and a 117-meter configuration, according to the company, this platform was developed to offer high performance and maintain reliability under the wind conditions present in Japan.

With the installation of the seven units, Eurus Hiyamizutouge will reach its planned capacity of 29.4 MW, the project also expands cooperation between GE Vernova and Eurus Energy within the Japanese renewable energy generation market. Gilan Sabatier, Commercial Director of Onshore Wind for International Markets at GE Vernova, noted that the 4 MW platform is adapted to the Japanese environment and aims to offer the durability and efficiency necessary to harness the country’s wind resources.

Masaru Akiyoshi, representative director and executive vice president of Eurus Energy, also highlighted the collaboration of the communities of Mutsu and Higashidori, along with the administrative agencies and other parties involved in the development of the project.

GE Vernova expands its presence in Japan’s wind energy sector

Currently, the technology of GE Vernova this represents approximately 25 % of Japan’s installed onshore wind capacity, the company also indicates that its equipment is present in roughly 50 % of the country’s installed high-power gas turbine capacity, the company further reported that it secured orders totaling 339 MW in Japan through 2025. This portfolio includes projects from utility companies and independent power producers. Globally, GE Vernova’s wind business has more than 59,000 turbines in operation, the new order in Japan reinforces the presence of its 4 MW onshore platform in a market where the company seeks to further expand its market share.

Japan is moving towards greater renewable energy generation

The Eurus Hiyamizutouge wind farm is being developed at a time when Japan continues to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its electricity system, the country aims to achieve between 36 % and 38 % of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030. GE Vernova and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry have also established a joint working group to study challenges and opportunities related to energy security and innovation, with a planned capacity of 29.4 MW, Eurus Hiyamizutouge will add new onshore wind generation to Aomori Prefecture using seven GE Vernova wind turbines.
