Katambi-2 confirmed new favorable results for Angola’s non-associated gas resources after completing its assessment in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin tests indicate a potential capacity exceeding 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Sonangol Exploration & Production and the Angolan National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) they drilled and tested the well about 1.3 kilometers from Katambi-1.
During operations, Katambi-2 penetrated two productive intervals with a total thickness of approximately 331 meters. Analyses showed an average porosity of between 9% and 12% along with good permeability. These parameters support the presence of high-quality reservoirs in this area of the Benguela Basin and provide new data for evaluating the potential commercial development of the resource.
Katambi-2 reaches 41 million cubic feet per day
Initially, tests conducted at Katambi-2 recorded a stabilized production of 41 million standard cubic feet per day of gas, in addition to 1,160 barrels per day of condensate.
Furthermore, during the tests no presence of water or hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was detected; this behavior is relevant to studying the technical and economic conditions of a future exploitation of the deposit.
According to the ANPG, the results obtained in Katambi-2 are higher than those recorded in Katambi-1, well drilled during 2014 and 2015.
Therefore, the new assessment allows for updating knowledge about the non-associated gas resources existing in Block 24 and analyzing its productive capacity more accurately.
First full DST test on non-associated gas from Angola
Another of the technical points highlighted was the execution of a complete drill stem test (DST), which is the first full flow test carried out on a non-associated gas reservoir in Angola.
The preliminary assessment of the results indicates that Katambi-2 could achieve a production of more than 100 million standard cubic feet per day of gas.
Furthermore, the data obtained provide information on the behavior of the reservoir under flow conditions and allow for a more accurate assessment of the economic viability of its potential development.
The combination of porosity, permeability, and production capacity recorded during testing strengthens the prospects for Block 24 within Angola’s gas exploration and production activities.
Angola is making progress in the development of non-associated gas
Meanwhile, the Katambi-2 results come at a time of heightened activity surrounding the exploitation of non-associated gas in Angola.
Months before these assessment operations, Azule Energy had started production from a project identified as the African country’s first offshore non-associated gas development.
Now, the results obtained by Sonangol and ANPG in the Benguela Basin add another asset with the potential to expand national gas production.
The next step will depend on the technical and economic assessments of the deposit. However, the data obtained from Katambi-2 provide a more solid basis for determining how these resources could be incorporated into Angola’s future energy development.
