Islang plans to invest 1.8 billion euros to renovate the Whitelee onshore wind farm and increase its capacity from 539 MW to nearly 1,000 MW.
Iberdrola, through its subsidiary ScottishPower the UK is preparing to upgrade Whitelee, the largest onshore wind farm. The plan involves replacing the existing wind turbines with more modern and powerful ones over the next few years.
With this intervention, the installed capacity of the complex would increase from 539 megawatts to about 1,000 MW, the estimated investment reaches 1.8 billion euros and would allow taking advantage of a good part of the infrastructure that already operates at the Scottish site.
New turbines to increase Whitelee’s capacity
In technical terms, repowering involves removing old equipment and installing wind turbines with greater power and better performance. This approach allows for increased electricity generation without relying entirely on new land or infrastructure built from scratch.
Furthermore, using existing turbines can improve fleet availability and facilitate monitoring of each unit, newer systems typically incorporate more precise digital controls to detect changes in performance and plan maintenance tasks.
