Google plans to invest at least 13 billion euros in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years. The project represents its largest investment in Europe and includes a nuclear energy supply agreement.
However, the scale of the operation has raised concerns among Finnish opposition parties. The main question is whether the electrical system has the capacity to support the growth of data centers without causing supply problems or excessive pressure on electricity prices.
Google AI in Finland Increases Electricity Demand
For years, Finland and other Nordic countries have attracted data centers due to their low temperatures, reliable electrical grids, and availability of low-carbon electricity.
Now, the growth of artificial intelligence is changing the scale of these facilities. The infrastructure required to train and operate AI systems demands large amounts of energy, and this has placed data center consumption under greater political scrutiny.
Given this scenario, Antti Kaikkonen, leader of the Centre Party, considers it necessary to ensure sufficient electricity and transmission capacity before approving new facilities.
Kaikkonen even proposed creating a national permitting system for new data center investments, with the goal of jointly assessing their effects on the electrical grid.
Opposition Fears Pressure on Electricity Prices
Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party has also expressed concern about the increase in energy demand.
Member of Parliament Niina Malm noted that electricity availability must be analyzed from an internal security perspective. Her approach seeks to ensure sufficient energy for the population and maintain prices that remain affordable.
The debate places Finland before an increasingly important question for countries attracting AI infrastructure: how to receive large technology investments without compromising the stability of the electricity supply.
Google Will Use Nuclear Energy from Loviisa
A key part of Google’s energy project is linked to the Loviisa nuclear power plant. The agreement includes a 22-year power purchase contract for up to 50% of the electrical output of the Finnish plant. This operation will help extend Loviisa’s expected lifespan to 2050 compared to the originally planned closure in 2030.
In this way, nuclear energy will play a significant role in the supply needed to support Google’s AI infrastructure expansion in Finland.
Google and Fortum Will Study New Energy Capacity
Likewise, Google will study the development of new nuclear and renewable energy sources together with Finnish utility Fortum.
This possibility directly addresses one of the main challenges of data center expansion: increasing generation capacity at the same pace as consumption grows.
For his part, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has defended the agreement and believes that Google’s investment will boost the country’s economy. He also maintains that electricity prices will remain under control.
The political discussion will continue to focus on determining how much new electrical capacity Finland will need to absorb large artificial intelligence projects while maintaining the stability of its grid and supply for homes and industries.
