Iberdrola has awarded new contracts to Ingeteam and Ormazabal for a combined value of nearly €30 million. The orders focus on battery energy storage systems and new mobile infrastructure designed to strengthen the operation of the electricity grid. These awards also maintain the participation of Basque industrial suppliers in projects related to the electrification and modernization of the electricity system, the contracts were discussed during a meeting of Iberdrola’s Board of Directors’ Executive Committee held in Bilbao.
Ingeteam receives 25 million for BESS systems
On the one hand, Iberdrola has awarded Ingeteam contracts worth €25 million for work related to battery energy storage systems, known as BESS. These installations will be linked to renewable energy projects in Spain, and their objective is to store electricity and provide greater flexibility to the system when generation or demand conditions change.
Thus, the systems BESS they allow for better use of electricity produced from renewable sources and facilitate its integration into the grid. Energy storage is becoming increasingly important as the share of variable technologies such as solar and wind power grows, batteries can also provide backup capacity during certain periods and contribute to more precise management of energy flows within the electrical system.
Ormazabal will supply two mobile substations
Furthermore, Ormazabal has been awarded a contract worth nearly €5 million to design, manufacture, and supply two mobile substations, these units will be used to improve the operational capacity of the electrical grid and can serve as temporary support during maintenance work, infrastructure incidents, or exceptional demand situations.
In this way, Iberdrola will be able to use mobile teams capable of taking over temporary functions while work is being carried out on permanent installations. This type of infrastructure also helps to maintain the continuity of service electricity supply under different operating conditions, its mobile nature allows for the transfer and deployment of additional capacity to the points where it is needed.
Iberdrola strengthens storage and electricity networks
For its part, Iberdrola frames both contracts within its initiatives to modernize electricity grids and expand energy storage capacity. The deployment of BESS systems and the reinforcement of grid infrastructure address different, though complementary, needs: while batteries allow for better management of available energy, mobile substations provide flexibility during technical interventions or extraordinary situations.
These solutions can also contribute to improving the resilience of the electricity grid; a system with greater responsiveness has more resources to handle scheduled maintenance, operational incidents, and variations in demand. The transformation of the electricity system also requires greater coordination between renewable generation, storage, and grid infrastructure. In this context, Iberdrola seeks to expand the necessary capabilities to support the progress of electrification.
Contracts for the Basque industry
In addition to the energy component, the contracts strengthen Ingeteam and Ormazabal’s presence within Iberdrola’s industrial chain. Both companies will contribute specialized technology in two strategic areas for the electricity system with battery storage and infrastructure for network distribution and operation.
The contracts also expand the participation of Basque industrial suppliers in electrical infrastructure projects and support a value chain with the technical capacity to develop equipment for the energy transition. The operation therefore combines investment in energy storage, modernization of electrical grids, and the procurement of industrial technology developed by companies with a significant presence in the Basque Country.
